Petri Plumbing Offers New Yorkers Tips to Waterproof Their Homes
Leading Brooklyn plumbing company encourages homeowners to take action to prevent water damage to their homes
BROOKLYN, July 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Petri Plumbing and Heating, Inc., a leading plumbing company serving Brooklyn since 1906, advises homeowners to undertake preventative measures to waterproof their homes.
As any home or business owner can tell you, accidents will happen. It can be caused by any size leak, both big and small. This can cause major damage that can translate into high costs for repairs. Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing, advises customers to gird their homes from the dangers of water leaks, broken pipes and running toilets.
Since leaks can account for up to 14 percent of the average household's water use, Petri suggests owners look for evidence of leaks before they get out of control and incur major costs for repair.
"There are common water hazards that every homeowner faces at one time or another," Petri says. "It's a lot simpler than many people think to waterproof their homes and avoid those issues."
Here are a few preventative measures he suggests:
- One of the most common leaks found in homes today comes from a running toilet that doesn't shut off. Simply put a few drops of food dye or dye tablets into the tank and wait 20 minutes to see if there's any evidence of possible leaks from the tank into the toilet bowl. If there is a leak, replace the valve inside the tank and ensure a proper fit to prevent further leaking.
- Evidence of leaking can often be found outside the home as well. Moss growth or greener vegetation around sprinkler heads are often indicators of damaged valves or broken heads. Have a professional inspect the heads for damage and have them replaced if needed.
- Look for accumulated mud or soil erosion, each of which is additional evidence of a broken pipe. Wet spots on the driveway and sprinkler heads that spout geysers also offer clues that there may be broken heads. Call a licensed plumber to find broken pipes before they can cause real damage.
- Toilet leaks, underground leaks, irrigation leaks and many other types of leaks can develop over time in any home or property. Older pipes or fixtures are more prone to rust and holes. Gusher water supply leaks are easily identified by sound or visual signs of flooding. Plumbing fixture faucet leaks can be either visible or hidden and usually occur around valve packing. Likewise, plumbing drain leaks sometimes only show up over a certain period of time, particularly when mold appears.
Petri Plumbing can help owners waterproof their property to avoid higher water bills and the property damage that leaks can create. To find out more information on how to waterproof your home, call Petri Plumbing at 718-748-1254 or go to www.petriplumbing.com.
