WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney Peter Feldman, senior counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has been confirmed as a Commissioner of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
President Donald J. Trump originally nominated Feldman on June 4, 2018 and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on a bipartisan 80-19 vote.
"I congratulate and welcome Peter Feldman to the CPSC. Mr. Feldman has extensive experience working on major consumer protection legislation, including congressional oversight of federal agencies, from his work with the United States Senate. I welcome his expertise and insights to the important work of the commission," said Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle, who still awaits full confirmation by the Senate as well.
Prior to his appointment, Feldman served as a key advisor on consumer product safety, data security, and privacy issues to U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. He also worked on the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, a landmark safety bill that addresses safety regulations to protect young children.
"I believe strongly in the mission of the agency because American consumers have every right to expect that the products they purchase will be safe and will not pose an unreasonable risk of injury to themselves or their families," Feldman said. "CPSC's safety work is critical, particularly when it comes to protecting our most vulnerable populations. I look forward to advancing these agency priorities while ensuring fairness in the execution of its duties."
Feldman received his B.A., cum laude, from Colgate University, and his J.D., cum laude, from American University's Washington College of Law. Feldman replaces former Commissioner Joseph Mohorovic and will finish out his term, which expires on October 26, 2019. Feldman has also been nominated to serve a seven year term beginning October 27, 2019.
About U.S. CPSC:
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazard. CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals – contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years.
Federal law bars any person from selling products subject to a publicly-announced voluntary recall by a manufacturer or a mandatory recall ordered by the Commission.
