Pet Shelters Hit Hard By East Coast Storms

Hundreds of animals wait for homes at NSALA, while lack of space prevents others from being rescued

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Shore Animal League America – the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization – said today that area shelters have been hit hard by the recent series of snow storms that have inundated the East Coast.

The Animal League has seen a decrease in pet adoptions since the first Nor'easter hammered the Tri-State in December. The drop in adoptions not only means that pets must stay at the shelter longer, but it also limits the organization's ability to rescue more animals at risk of being euthanized. The Animal League currently has a wonderful selection of hundreds of puppies, cats and dogs waiting for permanent, loving homes.

"Individuals and families that have been considering adding a pet to their lives should do it now," said Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President of Operations at North Shore Animal League America. For those who have been considering a puppy for adoption, winter is an opportune time since puppies cannot be leash walked until they complete a series of vaccinations at three months of age. In the meantime adopters can paper train their new best friend indoors, where it is nice and warm.
