Pest Control on Campus: Kicking Bed Bugs Out of Dorm Rooms
NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Assured Environments is urging campuses to take measures to prevent bedbugs from sneaking in through luggage, bedding and clothes. To help colleges prepare, Assured Environments has developed effective solutions for detecting and eliminating bedbug infestations.
"Assured Environments is committed to stopping bedbugs before they start," says Assured Environments Chief Operating Officer, Barry Beck. "Our K-9 inspections are a unique, cost-effective service that can detect the presence of bed bugs before they spread. Integration of our thermal heat treatments with conventional bedbug removal methods will expose facility occupants to fewer chemical hazards."
There is a growing bed bug problem in colleges and universities across the nation. Bed bugs have made a resurgence and experts say it will be almost impossible to find a university unaffected within the next two years.
Identifying Bed Bugs:
Bed bugs are wingless insects that are dark or reddish brown in color. Their extremely flat bodies can grow as large as an apple seed and are just under ¼" long. They are notorious for feeding on prey that are resting or sleeping.
Symptoms and Signs:
Bites on the body are the most common sign of bed bugs. They can appear as several welts and often in a zigzag line. The upper torso is the most common bite area. The welts can be extremely itchy and specks of blood will be visible on bedding.
How They Are Introduced:
These pests typically "hitchhike" from place to place as people travel. They make their way into campuses by fitting into folds of luggage, coats, bedding, furniture, folded clothes and more.
How to Avoid Getting Them:
Check second-hand furniture and borrowed clothing carefully for bedbugs before bringing it into your home. Wash clothes and put them on the highest setting in the dryer before packing for transport to your campus.
What To Do If Infested:
Contact a pest management company for bed bug removal. Seal clothes, shoes and bedding in plastic bags until you are able to put them in the dryer on the highest setting. Remove all clutter from the area and disassemble the bed.
