Personhood USA: Congressman Cory Gardner confesses pro-choice position
DENVER, March 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In an interview with the Denver Post, Congressman and U.S. Senate hopeful Cory Gardner admits to flip-flopping on his previous pro-life position.
"Cory Gardner has betrayed the Republican Party, his pro-life voters, and most importantly, unborn babies in Colorado," commented Jennifer Mason, Personhood Spokesperson.
The Republican Party Platform supports Personhood for all human beings, which Gardner now opposes. President Ronald Reagan also endorsed personhood in a January 14, 1988 proclamation which read:
"The unalienable right to life is found not only in the Declaration of Independence but also in the Constitution that every President is sworn to preserve, protect, and defend. Both the 5th and 14th Amendments guarantee that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law."
Reagan continued, "This sacred legacy, and the well-being and the future of our country, demand that protection of the innocents must be guaranteed and that the personhood of the unborn be declared and defended throughout our land."
The Republican Party Platform—which Reagan's pro-personhood ideology has helped to shape—also reads, "We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the 14th Amendment protections apply to unborn children."
The Denver Post article quoted Gardner's false beliefs that a personhood bill could ban contraception, when in fact it could not. Personhood amendments and legislative efforts clearly recognize that all babies, born or preborn, are people and should be protected under the law.
"Congressman Gardner should take note of the 2012 Presidential election, when the only Republican candidate who opposed Personhood – Mitt Romney – failed to win the presidency. Conservative voters expect a conservative candidate who will defend innocent life," concluded Mason.
