Personhood movement takes off in Alabama with a new push for pro-life regulations
MONTGOMERY, Ala., Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Personhood AL has become an official state partner to Personhood USA as part of a growing effort to protect human life at all stages of development without exceptions. The new organization seeks to educate the public on the personhood movement, motivate political action, and establish statewide legislation in Alabama. Personhood USA's State Partnership Program includes chapters in Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama.
A group of Alabama residents contacted Personhood USA to get involved in establishing a personhood amendment in their state and to rally others to stand with them in this battle for innocent lives. Personhood USA is a Christ-centered, biblically-directed organization dedicated to the non-violent advancement of the recognition and protection of the God-given, unalienable right to life of all innocent human beings as legal persons at every stage of their biological development. It will be guiding Personhood AL through its statewide efforts.
Alabama has already made progress in this battle through its Supreme Court ruling earlier this year. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled that a chemical endangerment statute must protect children who have not been born yet. The case involved Amanda Kimbrough, whose baby was born at 25 weeks and died due to methamphetamine exposure. The landmark ruling stated, "The decision of this Court today is in keeping with the widespread legal recognition that unborn children are persons with rights that should be protected by law."
Sam McLure, President of the newly established Personhood AL, commented: "We are extremely pleased with the number of individuals in our state who have come together in an effort to protect life beginning at the moment of fertilization. We know there will be challenges, but we are prepared to overcome and persevere so that every person can have an equal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as declared in the U.S. Constitution. We cannot sit back and let millions more be killed all because of a misconceived notion that a human is not a person until he or she is born. The people of Alabama will finally have an opportunity to let their voice be heard and put an end to abortion once and for all through one of our first objectives of filing a Personhood Amendment."
