OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second year in a row, a delegation of 19 Peralta Colleges students and two chaperones travelled to China as part of the Summer Student Study Visit in partnership with the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF). Initially recommended to the CUSEF by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, the foundation has also worked with other East Bay organizations such as the East Oakland Youth Development Center.
During the two-week trip, Peralta students travelled throughout China, attending seminars, interacting with locals, and learning about the country's history and economy.
Part of Peralta's core academic mission is to prepare students seeking career paths for a competitive 21st century global economy and enrich their global understanding and awareness amid critical cross-cultural exchanges.
"It was an amazing experience to participate in this program. It opened my eyes to the opportunities I can consider in today's international career environment. Without this opportunity, I would have never experienced first-hand what it could mean to be a part of a global job market and economy," said Carroll Edwyna Ellsworth, a student at College of Alameda. "I've come back wanting to learn more about China and Asian cultures."
"For the second straight year, students from the Peralta Colleges have participated in this insightful study exchange to China. The only way to prepare our students to engage on a global scale, is to ensure them access to opportunities to see the world beyond their immediate communities," said Congresswoman Lee. "I'd like to thank Chancellor Laguerre and the entire Peralta Colleges staff for making sure these life-changing opportunities are available to our students."
"We are grateful to have Congresswoman Barbara Lee's recommendation that Peralta students participate in this innovative cultural and educational enrichment program that helps them compete in a global job market. The Board will be excited, as always — to hear the report back from the student participants in this year's program," said Board President Julina Bonilla.
As uncertainty in state and federal funding continues, community colleges must seek strategic partnerships on behalf of students. Peralta Colleges must — whether it's an award-winning nursing program, cutting-edge training in cybersecurity, or international enrichment programs — remain diligent in preparing students for today and future careers. Peralta Colleges remain an affordable, quality option for families that offers opportunity for every student and invests in our community's future.
