PepsiCo Foundation And Disaster Relief Partners Respond To Urgent Need In Philippines Following Devastating Super Typhoon
PURCHASE, N.Y., Nov. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the devastation and destruction to the Philippines from Typhoon Haiyan, the PepsiCo Foundation is donating USD $1 million to support disaster relief and recovery efforts. The company is partnering with four relief agency partners to deliver this aid: American Red Cross International Response Fund, Give2Asia, Habitat for Humanity International and Save the Children.
"Over the last few days, we have seen heartbreaking scenes from the Philippines caused by this historic typhoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the millions of people affected by this devastating storm," said Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo. "As a committed member of the Filipino community, PepsiCo is bringing its resources and its partners together to help in this time of incredible need. We will be there for the Filipino people as they respond to and recover from this natural disaster."
The immediate needs following a typhoon are significant, as are those during recovery in the months and years following such a disaster. Each PepsiCo Foundation partner provides expertise in disaster relief in the aftermath and long-term rebuilding of impacted communities throughout the Philippines.
Through the American Red Cross, the PepsiCo Foundation is supporting the Philippine Red Cross, whose volunteer rescue and relief teams are providing assistance in the hardest hit communities, including search and rescue efforts and distribution of food and relief supplies. The $250,000 Foundation grant supports the American Red Cross's deployment of disaster relief specialists and equipment to the Philippines.
The PepsiCo Foundation is providing a $250,000 grant to Give2Asia, a social enterprise that is strongly positioned to identify local Filipino partners and agencies through its field team in Manila. These local agencies can meet the most urgent needs for relief in the short and long term.
A $250,000 grant will be given to Habitat for Humanity International to help in the production and distribution of thousands of clean-up kits and shelter repair kits. The shelter repair kits will contain tools and materials that can be used by families to repair their homes, allowing them to leave emergency shelters as soon as possible.
Save the Children, which has been working in the Philippines since 1981, will be providing essential relief and recovery supplies, such as kits for shelter, household and hygiene, which children and families need during their time of greatest vulnerability. A $250,000 PepsiCo Foundation grant will kick-start Save the Children's global appeal for support to quickly scale up humanitarian relief for children and families in the Philippines.
The PepsiCo Foundation will collaborate with agency partners over the coming months to assess the deployment of the relief committed and potential needs in the future.
In addition to the Foundation grants, PepsiCo's local partners, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. and exclusive national foods distributor Benby Enterprises, are mobilizing to identify needs, including product and logistics support, amid the significant infrastructure damage.
The PepsiCo Foundation has a long-standing history of working with these relief partners to help communities that have suffered as a result of natural disaster. From hurricanes in Haiti and the United States, to earthquakes in Japan and China, to floods in Missouri and the Philippines, PepsiCo and these agencies have come together to provide the support necessary to overcome the initial disaster and to help rebuild communities.
