People to People Announces Development Through Mentoring Delegation to Cuba
Esteemed professors to help college students gain an edge in job search on educational travel program
SPOKANE, Wash., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- People to People Ambassador Programs, the leader in global educational travel experiences for 50 years, has announced a "Development Through Mentoring" student travel program to Cuba beginning in December 2013. The program will be led by Boston University professors Karen Jacobs, Ed.D., Department of Occupational Therapy, and Elliot Saltzman, Ph.D., Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training.
Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Saltzman will provide delegation members on the college mentoring program with in-person and online mentoring opportunities to develop networking and career strategies and assist in job search planning.
With unemployment numbers remaining high, government studies show only 13% of 2013 college grads will find a job after graduating. Mentorship programs are increasingly recognized as a valuable supplement to the college experience that provides professional and academic networking opportunities and guidance regarding potential career paths.
"Our fields of expertise at Boston University are in occupational therapy, ergonomics, marketing, physical therapy and the movement and speech sciences," said Dr. Saltzman. "But the tools we implement in the mentoring process are universal across all areas. Students will have access to us from the orientation process through travel and beyond."
Dr. Jacobs will also lead a Mission in Understanding delegation to Cuba in August 2013 for People to People's Adult Citizen Ambassador Program.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to extend our expertise to a larger audience outside of Boston University," said Dr. Jacobs. "Successful mentoring really is about the exchange of ideas and facilitating network opportunities, and on the People to People programs we will have group and individualized sessions for students on best practices in this area."
People to People Ambassador Programs has been focused on developing a wider array of collegiate student travel programs based upon the strong desire from program alumni who want to continue traveling with People to People after high school. The programs to Cuba, including this mentoring opportunity, were introduced in 2013 after People to People received a "people to people" license from the Treasury department, intended to promote interaction with Cuba.
"A career mentorship program built in to our educational student travel product is new ground for People to People," said Nicola Balmain, Vice President of Travel Services for People to People. "We took a look at current trends for the collegiate audience and decided that supplementing an overseas educational opportunity with a professional development and mentoring curriculum addresses their biggest concern – life after graduation – while they gain valuable life experience in our program."
