"The results of our campaign were extraordinary and we were very pleased to share them in the Killer Content Awards program. It is a tremendous honor for us to be recognized as an award winner with other leading companies such as Glassdoor, Dell and Marketo. Based on the success of this campaign we plan to create additional programs similar in nature to generate additional engagement," said Bill Baumann, Market Leader, Penton's Design Engineering and Sourcing.
Launched across Penton's engineering brands – Electronic Design and Machine Design – "The World's Greatest Engineering Movie" campaign was designed to drive online user engagement and capture new leads for Penton's Design Engineering & Sourcing Group. Over a five-week period, registered users were asked to vote on their favorite movie in each bracket based on which movie made the best use of engineering technology. Engagement with users began with the editorial team soliciting input for movie nominations and initial bracket parings from the audience. Readers and Penton editors nominated 32 movies - from the entertainment/motion picture industry and included classic and new releases - where engineers and technology drove the plot. Weekly voting results were tallied through the content platform SnapApp and new bracket parings were posted online along with a weekly video update from the Community Leader. Users were notified via email when the new brackets were ready for voting. The winning movie was Apollo 13. Prize categories were established based on an earned points system for all users and prizes included movie tickets, movie gift baskets and t-shirts.
Here's what users had to say about "The World's Greatest Engineering Movie":
- "It was cool to have a contest which acknowledged the role of science and engineering in movie history."
- "It was a fun diversion drawing on both my entertainment and engineering experience. I enjoyed drawing these two aspects together and seeing if my choices lined up with other engineers."
- "Lots of fun. Looking forward to doing it again."
Capitalizing on the popularity and timing of the March Madness basketball tournament, Penton's Design Engineering & Sourcing Group will host a new campaign this March focused on STEM Starters. Users will be able to vote on how engineers got their inspiration to pursue Science, Math, Engineering and Technology. To learn more visit Machine Design and Electronic Design.
