2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, April 27
- Alternative Uses for Coal: Dr. John "Jack" Groppo, Program Manager, University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) will lead the discussion on other potential uses for coal, particularly in the chemicals industry, where it can be converted to liquids, gases, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, plastics and other specialty products. - Coal as an Energy Source – Taking A Global Perspective on Exporting: As traditional and emerging economies across the globe create more electricity using coal, what are the long-term possibilities for U.S. coal to supply this growing demand? This discussion will explore the impact of exporting. (Thoroughbred Room 5)
- Using Marketing to Drive the Survival of Coal: This panel will explore what companies are doing to ensure the clean coal industry will survive and thrive. More and more, the end-consumer will help drive this stability and growth. (Thoroughbred Room 7)
8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 28 in Thoroughbred 1-3
- Surviving a Difficult Coal Market – Simple Steps that Plant Operators Can Take: Gerald Luttrell, a professor of mining and minerals engineering at Virginia Tech, will discuss how the demand for domestic coal has caused a shift in the energy market and forced many coal producers to seek out new approaches for reducing costs and increasing productivity with limited capital investment. One of the most often overlooked business units that can offer such opportunities are coal preparation and blending facilities. This presentation provides a step-by-step overview of simple, yet very important, measures that plant operators can take to ensure that they actively contribute the highest possible benefit to the health and well-being of their company. These steps, which frequently require operators to reach out beyond the plant to interact with mining and marketing personnel, can serve as a backbone for building next-generation business units within the coal industry. Luttrell has completed $23.5 million in externally sponsored R&D projects and obtained 22 patents.
