Pennsylvania's Employment Situation: October 2010
HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 18, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment was 8.8 percent in October, down two-tenths of a percentage point from September.
Pennsylvania's unemployment rate remained below the national rate of 9.6 percent, and has been at or below the national rate for 91 of the past 94 months. The state rate was up 0.2 of a percentage point from October 2009, while the U.S. rate was half a point below its rate from a year earlier.
Pennsylvania's rate fell below 9.0 percent for the first time since February 2010.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted civilian labor force – the number of people working or looking for work – remained virtually unchanged for the second consecutive month. At 6,366,000 in October, the labor force count was up 1,000 from September. Resident employment rose by 11,000, the second consecutive month of growth. The number of unemployed residents fell by 10,000 to 560,000, down 33,000 from its peak level in July. Pennsylvania's labor force was down 25,000 from its October 2009 level.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs rose by 15,900 in October to 5,618,100. Growth was seen in eight of 11 supersectors. Education and health services showed the biggest increase of any supersector, up 9,700 jobs to a new record level of 1,143,500. Financial activities experienced its largest single-month increase in nearly 12 years, adding 2,200 jobs. Manufacturing, up 1,000, added jobs for the seventh time in nine months. Other notable increases occurred within leisure and hospitality; other services; trade, transportation and utilities.
Nationally, jobs rose for the first time in five months, adding 151,000 in October. Over a third of the national job growth was in education and health services.
Pennsylvania's job count is up 48,800 from October 2009. Nationally, nonfarm jobs were up 829,000 from last year.
