Pennsylvania's Employment Situation: November 2010
HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in November, down two-tenths of a percentage point from October.
Pennsylvania's unemployment rate remained below the national rate of 9.8 percent, and has been at or below the national rate for 92 of the past 95 months. The state rate was down 0.1 of a percentage point from November 2009, while the U.S. rate was two-tenths of a percentage point below its rate from last November.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell for the fourth consecutive month, and November was the third consecutive 0.2 of a percentage point decrease.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted civilian labor force – the number of people working or looking for work – was down 5,000 in November to 6,362,000. Resident employment rose by 9,000, the third consecutive month of growth. The number of unemployed residents fell by 13,000 to 547,000, down 46,000 from its peak level in July 2010. Pennsylvania's labor force was down 32,000 from its November 2009 level.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs rose by 5,100 in November to 5,619,700. Growth was seen in eight of 11 supersectors, and was split nearly evenly between goods-producing and service-providing industries. Trade, transportation and utilities showed the largest increase of any supersector, up 3,600. Other supersectors that added at least 1,000 jobs were professional and business services; education and health services; construction; government; and manufacturing. Leisure and hospitality, down 6,700, posted its largest single-month decline since March 1993. Mining and logging showed its first decline of 2010.
Nationally, jobs rose for the second consecutive month, up 39,000 in November.
Pennsylvania's job count is up 57,000 (1.0 percent) from November 2009; nationally, nonfarm jobs were up 842,000 (0.6 percent) from last year.
