Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame Inducts 784 Members from Lehigh County

ALLENTOWN, Pa., Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame, which recognizes Pennsylvanians who have voted in at least 50 consecutive general elections, welcomed 784 new members at an induction ceremony today in Lehigh County.

"Voting is among our most fundamental and important rights as United States citizens," Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele told the inductees. "President Eisenhower said, 'The future of the Republic is in the hands of the voters.' Voting is the most basic means by which we, the people, keep control of our government."

The Voter Hall of Fame is administered jointly by the Department of State, which oversees elections in Pennsylvania and its 67 county election offices.

Since the first members were inducted in 1982, Voter Hall of Fame membership has grown to 17,615, including today's new members. Each inductee receives a certificate signed by Governor Tom Corbett and Aichele.

Eligibility for the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame is determined by county election offices. Aichele urged county officials to hold induction ceremonies regularly.

"Citizens who vote every year not only keep elected officials at the local, state, and national levels accountable, they provide the best example possible to their children, grandchildren, and all of us of what it means to be a good citizen," Aichele said.
