Pennsylvania to host 2018 Summer Conference of National Association of Secretaries of State
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortés announced today that Pennsylvania will host the 2018 Summer Conference of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS).
The NASS Executive Committee on Wednesday selected Philadelphia as the host city for its 2018 summer event, to be held over 6 days in July.
"We are honored that the nation's secretaries of state will convene in Pennsylvania in 2018 for the biggest and most productive NASS gathering of the year," Cortés said.
He added that the historic city of Philadelphia is a natural fit for NASS, which was founded in 1904, making it the oldest nonpartisan professional organization of public officials in the nation.
"When NASS members, their staff and their families gather there, they will find themselves in a city rooted in history yet fully engaged in 21st-century innovation and culture," said Cortés, who served as NASS president from July 2008 to July 2009.
Pennsylvania last hosted the NASS conference in 1972 when it was held in Hershey.
The bid to host the Summer Conference was assembled with assistance from the office of Governor Tom Wolf, the office of Philadelphia Mayor James Kenney, PHL Convention and Visitors Bureau, Visit Philadelphia and Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
NASS serves as a medium for the exchange of information between states and fosters cooperation in the development of public policy. Membership is open to all states and territories. The association has key initiatives in the areas of elections and voting and state business services, as well as several well-established awards programs.
