Pennsylvania Technology Industry Added 5,000 Jobs in 2016

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's technology industry employment grew by an estimated 2.2 percent in 2016, adding some 5,000 new jobs, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation's tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world's leading technology association.

With an estimated 237,664 workers, Pennsylvania ranks eighth among the 50 states for tech industry employment.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Pennsylvania – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 268,200 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 5.7 percent ($40.1 billion) of the overall Pennsylvania economy.

The annualized average wage for a Pennsylvania tech industry worker was an estimated $95,600 in 2016, 84 percent higher than the average state wage ($52,100). Pennsylvania ranks eighth nationally in average tech industry wages.

Other Key Findings

• Pennsylvania ranks 31^st among all states in the Cyberstates 2017 Innovation Score, which is based on an analysis of new tech patents, tech startups and new tech business establishments on a per capita basis.
• The state is home to an estimated 16,027 tech business establishments.
• The tech industry employs an estimated 4.2 percent of the overall state workforce.
• Leading tech occupations include computer user support specialists (25,570), application software developers (24,620) and computer systems analysts (23,040).
• The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of R&D and testing labs (+ 7.7 percent) and computer systems design and IT services (+ 4.8 percent).
• Employers posted more than 20,300 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.

Around the Keystone State

New hiring in the category of computer systems design and IT services paced tech industry job growth in the Pittsburgh market in 2016. That's in line with national trends, where companies are increasingly reliant on cloud-based technology solutions, mobile technologies and advanced data analytics. In Philadelphia, engineering services led all categories in job growth.

Philadelphia is home to approximately 8,300 tech business establishments and an estimated 134,830 tech industry employees. In Pittsburgh, the corresponding numbers are approximately 2,300 businesses and 56,000 workers.
