Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission oversees Olympic boxing trials qualifier
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of State's State Athletic Commission (SAC) is overseeing Olympic boxing trials qualifying competition this week in Philadelphia.
The Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II began Monday, with male athletes competing in five weight divisions at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium and female athletes boxing in lightweight bouts in Baltimore.
"The Department of State is proud to play such an important role in the preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics," said Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortés. "The diligent work of our State Athletic Commission has made Pennsylvania one of the premier boxing states in the nation. This event is a fitting recognition of that fact."
About 315 male Olympic hopefuls registered to compete over the six days of competition. The first- and second-place boxers in each weight division will clinch spots in the Olympic Final Trials, said SAC Executive Director Gregory Sirb.
"The commission was delighted to be selected as the host for these Olympic qualifiers. Hopefully, this event will lead to a very successful 2016 for the athletes chosen to represent the United States at the Olympics," Sirb said.
The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August 2016. The date and location for the men's boxing Final Trials has not yet been set.
Qualifying rounds will continue through Thursday, with the men's semifinal competition set for 6 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, final-round bouts will begin at 4 p.m. For complete results and information or to watch a live stream of the matches, visit the USA Boxing website.
