Pennsylvania Sends More Resources to Assist Massachusetts in Response to Repeated Snowstorms
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania officials say the commonwealth is sending additional personnel to Massachusetts to assist that state in responding to record-setting snowfall. Massachusetts made the request through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).
A ten-person team, consisting of personnel from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Corrections and Pennsylvania State Police, and a county-level emergency management professional deployed this afternoon and are already enroute to Framingham, MA.
"Pennsylvania is happy to assist Massachusetts with this request," said PEMA Director Richard D. Flinn, Jr. "Several weeks of winter storms takes a toll on the citizens in a community, as well as the emergency managers and response personnel who are responsible for keeping people safe."
Once there, they will work twelve-hour shifts to support Massachusetts in emergency operations center operations such as managing resource requests for state assistance and coordinating resource requests among the state, local communities and other supporting organizations. The deployment is scheduled to last two weeks.
"Our agency has resources that can be of help to others whether the assistance is needed in this state or in other parts of the country. We are more than happy to help our sister Commonwealth and are confident they would do the same for us," said DOC Secretary John Wetzel.
EMAC is a congressionally-ratified mutual aid compact that legally establishes a national system to facilitate resources across state lines during an emergency or disaster. Under the compact, Massachusetts will pay all costs associated with the deployment.
