Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to Offer More Than 1,600 Items at Surplus Property Auction
Includes Special-Interest Items for Railroad Buffs, Model Train Enthusiasts
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Long underwear, a petticoat and christening gowns, a 1940 Pennsylvania license plate and a candle-dipping wheel are among the more than 1,600 items that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, or PHMC, no longer needs and will place up for auction on March 6.
Railroad buffs and model train collectors should be especially interested in the offerings. Included in the auction is a large selection of toy trains as well as memorabilia of the historic railroads that traversed the state.
"These are items that have no special significance to the history of Pennsylvania, or they duplicate what is already in our collections," said Barbara Franco, PHMC's executive director. "The commission's collections committee reviews items and determines if they should be designated for public sale. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and many of these items may have value to private collectors."
The auction will be held March 6 at Zeigler Auction Company, 1550 Sand Hill Road, Hummelstown, as part of the Department of General Service's surplus property auction. Items may be reviewed beginning at 7:30 a.m. The sale starts at 9 a.m.
A list of items to be auctioned as well as some photographs and travel directions to the auction facility is available at www.zieglerauction.com.
Prior to being designated for sale, the items were offered to other PHMC-run sites and museums, as well as historic museums across the state and nation.
Funds raised from the auction will be used only for the purchase or conservation of artifacts that contribute to PHMC's mission of interpreting Pennsylvania history for the public.
