Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to Break Ground for Washington Crossing Visitor Center Renovation
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission (PHMC), in partnership with the Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP), will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for renovations to the Washington Crossing Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10.
Representatives of both organizations will join Lt. Governor Jim Cawley, other elected officials and community leaders to mark the conclusion of years of planning and begin work on creating a modern, energy-efficient building to welcome visitors to the historic site along the Delaware River in Bucks County.
The renovation of the existing facility will provide additional space for programs and expanded exhibits.
The park commemorates Gen. George Washington leading his demoralized, ill-equipped troops across the icy river to make a surprise attack on Hessian troops at Trenton, N.J., in December 1776. The victory reinvigorated American forces.
Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of 25 historic sites and museums on the Pennsylvania Trails of History® administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in partnership with the Friends of Washington Crossing Park.
