Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, First Lady Susan Corbett Announce Winners of 'Lucky Dog Art Contest'

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett today announced the winners of the 2013 "Lucky Dog Art Contest." 

The canine-themed art contest asked Pennsylvania youth, 18 years of age and under, to illustrate why dogs are "man's best friend."

"The governor and I were thrilled to see the creativity and artistic talent of Pennsylvania's children," Mrs. Corbett said. "Every entry offered a heartfelt look at why people are so passionate about dogs."

Winning artwork will be on display at the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg on Sunday, Sept. 8, as part of the final "Second Sunday" event of the summer and will be featured on the First Lady's website, www.pa.gov/artcontest.

The winners in each age category are:

Primary - Up to Age 7
1^st place:  Lindsay M., Luzerne County, "A Day at the Park"
Honorable Mention:  Julia M., Butler County, "Murphy and Me, How Lucky Can We Be?"

Intermediate – Ages 8-10
1^st place:  Emma E., Wyoming County, "Friends at Sunset"
Honorable Mention:  Isabella Z., Cumberland County, "Unconditional Love"
Honorable Mention:  Isabel P., Indiana County, "Man's Best Friend"

Middle School – Ages 11-13
1^st place:  Nicole G., Lancaster County, "Never Forget"
1^st place:  Tiffany L., Dauphin County, "One Lucky Dog & His Friend"
Honorable Mention:  Alexis Z., Schuylkill County, "The Tag Along"

High School – Ages 14-18
1^st place:  Emily M., Cambria County, "Pillow Puppies"
Honorable Mention:  Fiona M., Dauphin County, "A Sweet Treat"
Honorable Mention:  Madison P., Dauphin County, "Unconditional Love"

"As dog lovers, Susan and I appreciate the thoughtfulness and detail that each child put into their entry," Corbett said. "We want to thank all of those who entered the art contest."

The winning entries were chosen by a panel of five judges, representing arts and canine-related organizations: The American Kennel Club, Art Association of Harrisburg, Jump Street, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Susquehanna Service Dogs. Judging was based on three criteria: originality, creativity and depiction of the contest theme.

The public is invited to visit the Governor's Residence from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, as part of Gallery Walk. Special programming, including dog demonstrations, will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free, family-friendly and reservations are not required.
