Pennsylvania Governor Corbett Discusses Pro-Jobs Budget, Tours Expanding U.S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant

PITTSBURGH, July 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett discussed his recently passed 2012-2013 pro-jobs budget today during a visit to U.S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant, where he cited the Allegheny County employer's growth as an example of how a balanced state budget that holds the line on spending and taxes creates a solid foundation for job creation.

"As governor, it is my priority to bring economic prosperity back to Pennsylvania by growing private sector jobs," Corbett said. "I remain committed to creating an economic environment where state government and business can work together to ensure job growth across the commonwealth."

For the second year in a row, the governor's budget does not raise taxes on Pennsylvania businesses and working families.  The budget lowers barriers to job creation by lowering job killing taxes on businesses and preserving critical tax credit programs that encourage private-sector job growth.

"Manufacturing remains the critical mass around which the rest of an economy grows," Corbett said. "That is why my administration has been focused on being certain that we partner with industry; that we encourage its growth and that government either helps or gets out of the way."

The recent budget makes critical tax law changes that had once stopped and discouraged companies like U.S. Steel from expanding and hiring in Pennsylvania.  Instead, the new tax structure encourages companies to move here, grow here and stay here in Pennsylvania.

"Some people forget that plants like this one and jobs like the ones being done here are the real drivers of our economy," Corbett said. "A steel industry job inside this plant supports another 17 on the outside."

The U.S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant currently employs 1,300 Pennsylvanians. Continuing construction on a new C-Battery Plant began in March 2010. The construction project alone has employed up to 800 contracted workers.
