Pennsylvania Governor Corbett Announces Disability Employment Outreach Day

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today announced a Disability Employment Outreach Day event scheduled for Oct. 31 in Harrisburg and declared October as Pennsylvania Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The event will provide individuals with disabilities information about civil service employment opportunities in state and local government. The State Civil Service Commission, Governor's Cabinet for People with Disabilities and the Office of Administration are hosting the event.

"Hiring individuals with disabilities is a great choice for businesses. This is an underemployed, motivated workforce with talent and drive," Governor Corbett said. "We are pleased to provide information about civil service jobs and to facilitate the hiring of these dedicated individuals."

Job seekers with disabilities are encouraged to attend to learn about civil service employment opportunities, services available for individuals with disabilities, and the civil service employment process. Recruiters will be available to meet with job seekers for individualized employment counseling. There will be employment presentations and on-site job counselors.

Attendees will learn about the application, testing and hiring processes as well as other available accommodations and services. Job seekers should bring up-to-date resumes.

WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians should have the opportunity to live and work with dignity, freedom and economic self-sufficiency; and

WHEREAS, the vast majority of individuals with disabilities want to and can be employed in competitive, integrated employment; and

WHEREAS, in September of 2014 the national unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 12.3 percent, compared to 6.0 percent for people without disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania continues to urge businesses to employ Pennsylvanians with disabilities through the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) approach utilizing the Business Services and Outreach Division of the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Hiring People with Disabilities How-To Guide; and

WHEREAS, the United States Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy recognizes October 2014 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month with the theme: Expect. Employ. Empower.
