Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to Offer Free Autism Training for Providers
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 27, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Department of Human Services' Bureau of Autism Services is pleased to announce free training opportunities for professionals who work directly with people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
DHS is committed to increasing the capacity of professionals that are trained to effectively support individuals with autism and their families. This training will provide a better understanding of ASD and highlight considerations for successful support, including:
- navigating challenging behaviors;
- communicating with individuals with autism; and
- successful family and team engagement.
According to the Pennsylvania Autism Census, there are over 55,000 children and adults in PA with autism. Data from the census indicate a 181 percent overall increase of individuals with ASD in PA from 2005 to 2011 and a 334 percent increase of adults (21+).
This dramatic upward trend is expected to continue. Based on these statistics, there is an increasing possibility that direct support professionals providing supports and services in Pennsylvania will interact with a child or adult with autism.
These trainings are designed for professionals who directly support people with ASD such as; Employment Specialists, Music Therapists, Licensed Professional Counselors, Registered Nurses, Home Health Aides and Adult Program Providers.
