Pennsylvania DCNR Now Accepting Grant Applications for Community Recreation, Conservation Projects

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is now accepting applications for 2011 Community Conservation Partnership Program grants that assist county and local governments and non-profit organizations across the state with recreation and conservation projects.

Applications are due April 20.

"For the second year we will be accepting applications electronically as an environmentally-friendly practice," DCNR Secretary John Quigley said. "DCNR also has made many process improvements to make applying for a grant more customer-friendly, as well as to include multiple reviewers of grant applications to apply a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise to the review process."

Examples of eligible projects include community recreation projects to develop and rehabilitate parks and recreation facilities; open space conservation projects including purchase of land or conservation easements to protect critical habitat; developing greenways and trails; purchasing trail maintenance equipment; river conservation activities like fishing and boating access along river corridors; and partnership projects that provide education and training on natural resources, recreation, parks, greenways and trails.

Specific priorities for DCNR grant projects this year are: park and recreation facilities that demonstrate green principles and connect children to healthy recreation and the outdoors; trails; river access projects and projects identified by regional partnerships.

Funding for the grants comes primarily from DCNR's Keystone Fund, which is generated from a portion of the realty transfer tax and the Growing Greener program.
