Pennsylvania DCED Secretary Dennis Davin Issues Statement on Corrections' Facility Closure Announcement, Citing Stability of Region's Economy
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin released the following statement today regarding the announcement that the Department of Corrections will begin the process to close SCI Pittsburgh, citing the facility as the site that will have the least economic impact:
"I commend Governor Wolf and Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel for conducting an open and transparent process that allowed our department to consider the potential economic impact of a prison closure at each of the five proposed sites.
"In comparison to the other potential closure sites, we believe that the Pittsburgh site is at the greatest advantage for future revitalization based on its location, assets, and the city's robust economy.
"The southwest region has realized a steady stream of business expansions in recent years, and with SCI Pittsburgh's close proximity to both the river and the industrial corridor, the site is likely to be repurposed quickly.
"The Department of Community and Economic Development will work to immediately deploy its resources to assist the region and partners in this effort."
