Pennsylvania American Water Now Accepting Applications for Environmental Grant Program

HERSHEY, Pa., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania American Water announced today that the application process is now open for its 2010 Environmental Grant Program to support innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds and community drinking water supplies.

The company will award grants of up to $10,000. The program is designed to support diverse types of activities, such as watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, biodiversity projects, streamside buffer restoration projects and hazardous waste collection efforts.

"Through the Environmental Grant Program, we have been able to support many local organizations with meaningful, sustainable initiatives that preserve and protect our watersheds," said Pennsylvania American Water President Kathy L. Pape. "We encourage applications from municipalities, schools, environmental organizations and civic groups that share our commitment to environmental stewardship."

To qualify, the proposed project must be:

• Located within Pennsylvania American Water's service area; and
• Completed between May 1, 2010 and November 30, 2010; and
• New or innovative community initiative, or reflect significant expansion to an existing program.

Projects will be judged based on criteria that include clarity of project goals and projected impact, strength of collaboration with other community and/or municipal organizations, and evidence that the project will provide long-term, sustainable environmental results.

In 2009, the company awarded approximately $33,000 in grants to a total of nine recipients: Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority, Everhart Museum (Lackawanna County), California University of Pennsylvania (Washington County), Montgomery County Department of Parks & Heritage Services, Abrahams Creek Watershed Association (Luzerne County), Berks County Solid Waste Authority, Borough of Pen Argyl (Northampton County), Lower Makefield Township (Bucks County) and South Park Township (Allegheny County).

Pennsylvania American Water recently mailed informational brochures and applications to more than 500 municipalities, environmental groups and civic organizations in its service territory.
