Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Supports Governor Wolf's Veto of Pension Legislation S. B. 1
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder applaud Governor Tom Wolf for his veto of Senate Bill 1, an unfair and costly proposal that forces future employees and taxpayers to pay for the failures of the Legislature to adequately fund the pension system.
"We thank Governor Wolf for standing up for the working families of Pennsylvania by vetoing legislation that doesn't solve the problem but makes the problem even worse by increasing the pension debt by as much as $31 billion in additional costs over the next 30 years. Not only would it be more costly for taxpayers, it will damage the retirement security of hundreds of thousands of school teachers, nurses, caregivers and public service workers who have made their contributions so that they have a decent retirement. I applaud Governor Wolf for fighting to protect and expand retirement security for all workers, I also urge the leadership in the General Assembly to join him in supporting solutions to protect and expand good pensions for all of Pennsylvania's working families," Bloomingdale said.
Secretary-Treasurer Snyder stated, "Now that Governor Wolf has vetoed this 400 page pension debacle bill, we urge legislative leaders to put aside extreme right wing politics and policies and begin working with Governor Wolf and the other members of the legislature who are committed to practical, realistic, and fair solutions that move Pennsylvania forward. It's time to get down to business of passing a budget that invests in education, good jobs and retirement security for all," Snyder said.
