Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Leading Massive GOTV Push For General Election
Labor's Ground Game is Pivotal in Key Races
HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO is entering the final phase of our massive "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) campaign as the Labor 2014 draws to a close. This is the culmination of a months-long ground campaign to help secure victories for pro-worker candidates, including Tom Wolf for Governor and down ballot candidates for U.S. Congress and the State Legislature.
Thousands of union volunteers are hitting the streets and the phones this week, and through Election Day, to speak directly with union members. They will be communicating the high stakes of this election for working people. This GOTV effort over the final days of the election campaign caps the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Labor 2014 member-to-member voter contact program, which uses sophisticated voter-targeting technology, alongside traditional boots-on-the-ground campaigning, to ensure that workers have a voice on Election Day.
We have already called and door-knocked over a half million members across Pennsylvania this cycle, and we expect to nearly match that output again over the final 5 days of GOTV. We have had face-to-face conversations with over 100,000 members at the doors, and we've encountered incredibly strong support for Tom Wolf and our endorsed down ballot candidates among our members, whether they are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents. This election is not about party, it's about electing candidates who stand up for working people – and that's why we've seen such an overwhelming number of union volunteers who have been making calls and knocking doors for our endorsed candidates this year.
"Whether we're teachers, firefighters, electricians or health care workers – working people need a seat at the table to ensure that our rights on the job are protected, " said Rick Bloomingdale, President of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO. "That seat at the table comes from voting."
"Every election has consequences for workers, and this election will decide whether we move forward with a proactive agenda and shared prosperity, or we continue to slide backwards in a race to the bottom. It's more important than ever that workers make their voices heard on Election Day," said Frank Snyder, Secretary-Treasurer of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and the State Labor Federation's Political Director.
