Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Joins in Expressing Heartfelt Sympathies to Families of Victims of Horsehead Zinc Plant Explosion
Workers Encouraged to Donate to the Memorial Fund For Victim's Families
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Richard Bloomingdale expressed his deepest sympathies on behalf of the entire labor movement to the families of those workers who were killed and injured in the explosion at the Horsehead Corporation's zinc processing facility in Monaca, Pennsylvania on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010.
"We are deeply saddened and our hearts go out to the families and friends of Corey Keller and James Taylor and their Steelworker brothers who were injured in the explosion at the plant's zinc refinery area. We encourage the entire labor movement to make donations to the Memorial Fund established by the USW Local 8183 to assist the loved ones in coping with this terrible tragedy," Bloomingdale said.
United Steelworkers Local President Bernie Hall, which represents about 500 Horsehead workers, announced the establishment of the memorial fund the day after the tragedy. Those wishing to donate can send checks or money orders made out to the Keller and Taylor Families Memorial Fund to USW Local 8183, 1445 Market Street, Beaver, PA 15009.
Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder, who is a member of USW Local 8183, joined President Bloomingdale in expressing the heartfelt sympathies of the entire labor movement in Pennsylvania as well as the many union brothers and sisters in other states.
"Just recently we marked the 40th Anniversary of the enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and although OSHA has improved working conditions, working men and women remain in danger and there are far too many tragedies," Snyder said.
