Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Criticizes Philadelphia School District and Governor Corbett's Role in Manufacturing a Crisis in the Philadelphia Schools in Attempt at Political Gain
HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder described the Philadelphia School District's cancellation of the teachers' contract today as a desperate attempt to provide cover to the Governor's failed education policies.
"This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by a candidate that is losing by 20 points in the polls to try to manufacture a crisis in order to shift public attention away from his failure to provide the resources necessary to school districts across the State, including the Philadelphia School District, to fulfill their Constitutional obligation of providing a thorough and efficient education for our children" Mr. Bloomingdale said.
"The School District has already attempted to short circuit the collective bargaining process by seeking relief in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. They failed. Now they are trying the same tactic in the Commonwealth Court. It's a disgrace that the school district would rather attempt to impose a contract than work with the teachers to come up with a solution that is best for Philadelphia's kids," Mr. Snyder said.
