Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Critical of Limiting Rights of Victims to Achieve Full Recovery for Injuries and Death Caused by Negligence
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder today criticized the passage of legislation repealing joint and several liability, which will deny injured workers and surviving families their rights to full recovery while providing a safe harbor for grossly negligent employers and corporations.
"This legislation tilts the playing field even further in favor of negligent corporations and employers but against working families and consumers who suffer injuries and death due to unsafe work and products. It makes it more difficult if not impossible for working families to hold employers and corporations accountable for safe working conditions and safe products," Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale said.
"The primary concern should be protecting the rights of victims – workers and their families - who are at a considerable economic disadvantage over big business in seeking recovery for injuries and death caused by negligence; not giving corporations even more protections and shields to escape responsibility and liability for gross negligence. This bill is not a jobs bill it is simply a bad bill that endangers the lives and limbs of workers, while shielding corporations from their responsibility for providing safe working conditions and safe products," Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder said.
