The theme of this Convention is "The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO - a Rising Tide for America." The theme underscores the significant role of Pennsylvania's labor unions in setting the standards of leadership and progress for all workers across the nation.
It is no coincidence that the City of Philadelphia, which is the birthplace of freedom and liberty, is also the birthplace of our nation's trade union movement. Unions and worker associations have been an essential part of the fabric of our society since the very beginnings of our nation.
Delegates, representing local unions, and other labor organizations affiliated with the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, are expected to attend this Convention. The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO is the largest labor organization in the State, representing over 800,000 union workers. The delegates will set the plans for electing pro-worker candidates in the 2012 elections, as well as setting policies to protect and create good jobs, quality affordable health care, retirement security, and improving opportunities for workers to form unions.
