Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Congratulates Local Recipients of AFL-CIO "Dreams of Jobs and Freedom" Scholarship
Scholarship Honors the Legacy of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO congratulates scholarship winners of the AFL-CIO "Dreams of Jobs and Freedom" Scholarship. James Benedek, Kayla Gaskin, Marcus Erdman, and Elizabeth Aryee each received a one-time $5,000 scholarship for the academic year beginning in fall 2013 through summer 2014.
To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, the AFL-CIO awarded scholarships to help graduating high school seniors realize their dreams of a college education. James Benedek, Kayla Gaskin, Marcus Erdman and Elizabeth Aryee are among 60 recipients around the country from union households and community groups to receive the scholarship
These scholarships will further educational dreams for many. The scholarship will also continue the legacy of the March on Washington and the fight for social and economic justice.
Pennsylvania AFL-CIO congratulates them on receiving the "Dreams of Jobs and Freedom" scholarship and wishes them success in their future endeavors.
Candidates were required to submit one essay of approximately 500 words as part of the evaluation criteria. Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale congratulated the contestants for demonstrating an outstanding ability to communicate and their compassion for social and economic justice. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators.
