TYSONS, Va., Nov. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- James Schenck, President and CEO of PenFed Credit Union and CEO of the PenFed Foundation, was honored by Habitat for Humanity for supporting DC families in realizing their dreams of homeownership during the 30th Anniversary Habitat for Humanity Gala on the evening of November 5.
"PenFed is proud to make the dream of homeownership a reality for so many deserving families and to revitalize the communities in which we serve," said Schenck. "I accept this award on behalf of PenFed's 1.8 million members and 2,700 employees who give their time and talents to help others."
Since 2013, PenFed has provided more than $1.4 million in support to DC Habitat through direct contributions and financing. Additionally, over 50 PenFed volunteers have spent nearly 400 hours volunteering at DC Habitat build sites.
Habitat for Humanity honored Schenck for his outstanding volunteer commitments and dedication to the organization's mission. The Honorable Rob Portman, United States Senator, and The Honorable Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, D.C., were also honored for their support.

PenFed Credit Union's charitable arm, the PenFed Foundation, directly supports the dream of homeownership through its Dream Makers program by providing members of the military community with grants for down payment and closing cost assistance. It provides service members, veterans, their families and support networks with the skills and resources they need to improve their lives through programs on financial education, home ownership, short-term assistance and veteran entrepreneurial assistance.
Since 1989, DC Habitat has served 1,500 families and built and repaired more than 300 homes utilizing the great support of more than 34,000 volunteers. In addition, 52% of DC Habitat homeowners have returned to school, 92% of DC Habitat children graduate high school, and more than 74% of DC Habitat homeowners health has improved.
