MANASQUAN, N.J., Jan. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fair Rate Funding, a leader in pelvic mesh lawsuit funding, reports that Johnson and Johnson (J&J) has finally made an attempt to settle a small percentage of over 40,000 pelvic mesh product liability lawsuits currently pending in the United States. According to Bloomberg, Johnson and Johnson has pledged more than $120 million to resolve 2,000 to 3,000 of these cases.

The lawsuits allege that defects in design and manufacturing in pelvic mesh products, typically used to treat Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP), caused the product to erode inside of women's bodies. These women allegedly suffered organ damage and were left in constant pain by mesh surgical inserts.
Women complain that Johnson and Johnson's Ethicon pelvic mesh products shrink and/or erode after implantation. This is said to cause organ damage, incontinence, inability to have sexual relations and constant pain. J&J agreed in June 2012 to pull some lines off the market.
Although J&J has agreed to resolve only a small amount of mesh lawsuits thus far, these settlements mark the first meaningful settlement outlay from J&J and its Ethicon subsidiary for a significant number of mesh lawsuits. The amount is said to apply to 2,000 to 3,000 mesh lawsuits currently pending.
J&J is a named defendant in the most pelvic mesh defect lawsuits by far. The victims of transvaginal mesh currently participating in pelvic mesh litigation number over 100,000. Suits are filed against several device makers, including American Medical Systems, Boston Scientific, Coloplast, and C.R. Bard.
Mesh manufacturer Boston Scientific recently pledged $119 million to resolve approximately 3,000 cases in its first attempt to settle these actions.
Paul M. Coppola, President of mesh lawsuit funding firm, Fair Rate Funding, commented on the story. "We are certainly pleased to see that some mesh victims will be afforded relief, if only in the form of monetary compensation. This settlement offer is a step in the right direction but only a small step as there are still tens of thousands of mesh victims waiting for settlement as the manufacturers dig in their heels."
