Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall
WASHINGTON, March 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of Stewart Lee Udall, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior and father of Senator Tom Udall.
"As the House debates legislation today to restore America's public lands, it is with great sadness that we have learned that one of the greatest champions in our nation's history for conservation, Stewart Udall, has passed away.
"In the House, Stewart Udall served with distinction. But he will long be remembered for his triumphs as Secretary of the Interior. From that post, Stewart Udall championed the burgeoning environmental movement, protected the treasures that are our parks, seashores, and wildlife refuges, worked for energy independence, and ensured the arts remain a central part of civic life.
"I hope it is a comfort to the many that grieve Stewart's passing, especially his children, including our colleague, Senator Tom Udall, his grandchildren, and his nephew, Senator Mark Udall, that so many share their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."
