Pelosi Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Vote on Paycheck Fairness Act
WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the Senate Republicans blocking a vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which passed the House nearly two years ago:
"The Paycheck Fairness Act reaffirms an American value: equal pay for equal work. This legislation has the support of the majority of the House, the Senate, and the American people; yet today, partisan politics blocked progress.
"Republican Senators stood against fundamental fairness for America's working women and families struggling to get by; with a parliamentary tactic, they have prevented the Paycheck Fairness Act from moving forward. But the problem remains: women still earning just 77 cents for every dollar men make. And in this time of great economic challenge, that difference in pay makes a big difference for families.
"Democrats in Congress will continue to work on behalf of equality to the workplace."
