Pelosi Statement on Muni Bus Transit Grant
WASHINGTON, July 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to a $6,822,106 grant awarded today to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni) Phelan Loop Bus Facility Project through the Obama Administration's Livability Initiative:
"Today's announcement highlights San Francisco's continued leadership in the realm of livable communities and transit-oriented development. It will increase public transportation options, while reducing congestion and our dependence on foreign oil.
"The funding for the Phelan Loop Bus Facility will spur job creation for San Franciscans while generating new affordable housing, retail and green, open spaces. The project will improve access to public transportation for San Francisco City College students and the surrounding neighborhood."
Background:
This funding is provided through the Department of Transportation's Bus Livability Grant Program, utilizing prior-year unallocated Bus and Bus Facility Funding as part of the Obama Administration's Livability Initiative to "initiative to better coordinate transportation, housing and commercial development investments to serve the people living in those communities." The project will relocate a bus turnaround and holding area from the 1930's to a more discreet location, utilizing the new space for mixed-use, affordable housing and retail structure, reserving a portion of the land for open space.
