Pelosi Statement on House Passage of Legislation to Give the Federal Government Authority to Access Oil Spill Funds
WASHINGTON, June 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the House unanimously passed legislation permitting the Coast Guard to obtain one or more advances from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to underwrite federal response activities to the BP oil spill.
"Today, the House voted unanimously to pass legislation giving the Administration authority to continue its federal response to the disastrous oil spill; this legislation now heads to President Obama for his signature. The House is hard at work, holding hearings, conducting oversight, and crafting additional legislation in response to this catastrophe. And while the federal government will continue with its swift and sustained response to this crisis, we will ensure that BP and the other responsible parties foot the bill.
"Democrats are committed to tough oversight and accountability over Big Oil. However, for nearly a decade, the Bush Administration and Republicans in Congress put the interests of the oil companies ahead of the American people; this paved the way for the worst environmental disaster in American history. We stand with the families, workers, and small business owners of the Gulf Coast, and will do everything we can to help them recover and rebuild."
