Pelosi Statement on House Passage of Bipartisan Cybersecurity Enhancement Act
WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after the House passed the Cybersecurity Enhancement Act, a bipartisan bill to improve cybersecurity in both the private and public sectors. The House passed the bill by a vote of 422 to 5.
"The last decade has witnessed the rapid expansion and growing significance of information technology, bringing businesses, communities, and nations closer together, and increasing the productivity of workers worldwide. This growth has been critical to progress in major sectors of our economy and a driving force behind our strategic investments in broadband access and adoption throughout the country. At the same time, we have seen increasing threats to both our public and private IT infrastructure.
"Today, the House took action to tackle this challenge – strengthening cybersecurity, building public-private partnerships, and investing in the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
"The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act marks the beginning of a strong, coordinated effort to address an escalating threat to governments and business. This bipartisan bill will give us the tools to train the cybersecurity workforce, coordinate research and development throughout federal departments, and promote a cybersecurity education and awareness campaign for the general public. The legislation will require the development of international cybersecurity standards and bring the best ideas from our universities and industry to the table. And it will help minimize the risks to our IT infrastructure and decrease the potential for breaches that place our government, private enterprise, and economy in peril."
