Pelosi Statement on First Meeting of Conference Committee to Complete Comprehensive Wall Street Reform Legislation
WASHINGTON, June 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement on the first meeting of the joint House-Senate conference committee that will complete comprehensive Wall Street reform legislation:
"Members of the House and Senate began work today to produce a Wall Street reform bill that protects consumers, holds Big Banks accountable, ends taxpayer-funded bailouts, and imposes tough oversight of Wall Street to ensure it never again costs us 8 million jobs on Main Street. The result will send a clear message to the financial industry: the party is over; consumers come first; and our middle class will no longer be left with the bill for Wall Street gambles.
"The conference committee meetings are being held in the light of day, televised so the public will clearly see that Republicans are siding with Wall Street and Big Banks, and Democrats are standing up for the up for the middle class.
"Congressional Republicans have to make a choice: Will they try to take us back to the failed Bush policies that cost millions of Americans their jobs, homes, and retirements? Or will they join Democrats to protect the middle class and ensure that the recklessness of Wall Street no longer causes joblessness on Main Street?"
