Pelosi Statement on Final Passage of Temporary Extension of Unemployment and Health Benefits
WASHINGTON, April 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after final passage of H.R. 4851, the Continuing Extension Act of 2010, extending temporary unemployment and health benefits for out-of-work Americans. The bill now heads to the President's desk for his signature:
"Since the start of the recession, unemployment insurance and COBRA health benefits have provided a lifeline of security for the millions of Americans struggling to find a job, care for their families, and pay the bills. Many are out of work through no fault of their own – and it is up to our nation's leaders to stand up for the interests of every American and extend vital assistance to our hardest hit families until they get back on their feet.
"Extending unemployment benefits is one of the most effective investments we can make in our economic growth – because the money gets out the door and into the economy quickly. And tonight, we voted to secure this critical aid for the men and women who need it most.
"In passing this bill and sending it to the President, we have succeeded in putting the emergency economic needs of everyday Americans ahead of the political interests of some Republicans who had decided to delay at the expense of families trying to make ends meet."
