Pelosi Statement on 65th Anniversary of V-J Day
WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement commemorating the 65th anniversary of V-J Day, which marked the end of World War II. Last month, the House passed a resolution honoring the millions of Americans who fought in this conflict and the nearly 2 million veterans still living today:
"America honors the service and sacrifice, bravery and patriotism, of all who fought on distant shores in World War II and all who supported them here at home. On this day, we remember a generation of heroes that stormed beachheads and served on the frontlines; that defended liberty and triumphed in the name of our democracy. In the words of the resolution passed by the House, our forces 'faced vicious combat, exhibited unmatched bravery, and suffered untold tragedy' – and they emerged victorious.
"Sixty-five years after the end of World War II, we recall how a moment of peril united a people – and we continue to summon that same spirit in support of our men and women in uniform.
"Our nation remains grateful to those who paid the ultimate price on the battlefield and to the families who lost loved ones. Our country remains true to the causes for which so many fought and died. On this anniversary, we celebrate a great triumph, promise to honor the veterans of World War II, and pledge to steadfastly support their successors still fighting for our security today."
