Pelosi Statement in Recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. His birthday is today but the holiday will be observed on Monday, January 18:
"Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to making real the proposition that all people are created equal. His struggle for civil rights and his march for equality marked a turning point in American history – an extraordinary step forward in the fight to truly bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice. Because of his dream, this nation could live up to its legacy as a 'sweet land of liberty' and - in the words of Dr. King - 'emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man's inhumanity to man into the bright and glittering daybreak of freedom.'
"On Martin Luther King Day, we honor the memory and mission, vision and values, of one of America's greatest leaders with acts of service and with efforts to continue Dr. King's work, to build bridges of understanding and brotherhood in our communities, and to restore the promise of progress to our neighborhoods and our nation.
"This year, we also recall that Martin Luther King lost his life while fighting for the rights and wages of workers in Memphis, Tennessee. We remember that his 'promised land' extended to the cause of social and economic justice, to the battle of work and opportunity for all. Today – as we confront another age of economic hardship – let us live by the light of his example and march hand-in-hand on behalf of the common good and in the name of prosperity for every American."
