Pelosi Statement in Recognition of Black History Month
WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in recognition of Black History Month:
"Black History Month is a time to honor the extraordinary progress of our forebears and rededicate ourselves to the promise of equality for Americans of every race and background. It offers us an opportunity to recall the sacrifice and contributions of the generations who came before us and to overcome the remaining obstacles to economic empowerment and opportunity for all.
"In this era of economic hardship, we must remain committed to the key pillars of advancement for African Americans and for every American: jobs, a strong education, a steady paycheck, affordable health care, and a fair shot at success.
"Today – with so many struggling to realize the dream of progress – Congress is working with President Obama to extend the blessings of prosperity to the entrepreneurs, small business owners, and workers who form the core of our economic growth. The House has already passed a jobs bill and I hope the Senate will act soon so our nation can continue to grow and build up a diverse, strong, and thriving middle class.
"Each chapter of black history has been defined by a nation and a people who never give up, who refuse to accept the status quo, and who work to make the pledge of our founders a reality for all of our children. This year, let us renew this same spirit and build on this tradition of hard work, responsibility, equality and opportunity for African Americans and our entire nation."
