Pelosi Remarks Before Meeting With King Abdullah II of Jordan
WASHINGTON, April 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a brief press availability this morning with King Abdullah II of Jordan prior to their meeting in the Capitol. Below is a transcript of the press availability:
Speaker Pelosi. Good morning. I am very pleased and honored to once again welcome His Majesty to the Capitol of the United States.
When I became Speaker, the first head of state that I invited to speak to a joint session of Congress was King Abdullah. He gave us the benefit of his thinking at the time, and we continue to count on the benefit of his wisdom. His views are sought here, his judgment is respected, and his friendship his valued.
We are all very pleased that he has been a leader in the summit that the President just completed. So whether it is stopping the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, fighting terrorism, or striving to bring peace to the Middle East, King Abdullah has been a leader, a respected leader.
I also want to acknowledge the work that Jordan is doing in Afghanistan to improve the lives of the Afghan people and extend my condolences for the loss of life of one of your Jordanian participants in that struggle.
Again, I look forward to a conversation with His Majesty. His family, of course, is very respected in this country and certainly in this Congress. He comes from a proud tradition but has made his own proud mark on history with his significant leadership.
Your Majesty, welcome to the Capitol.
King Abdullah. Thank you very much. Thank you very much, ma'am. I am very delighted to be back here in Washington.
Yesterday, we had a very fruitful and successful summit with the President. But we are also here to discuss with the President the challenges of the Middle East, namely the peace process, Afghanistan and other areas of contention. And our discussions were fruitful and have allowed us to create the strategies between Jordan and the United States of how to bring parties together now part of the region.
I am here with great delight at Congress today to talk about bilateral issues but also again how we can put our minds together to bring peace and stability to the Middle East.
It is always an honor to be here, ma'am. We are always looked after, all our colleagues here so well. And this just continues to improve every time we meet.
Thank you very much.
