Pelosi Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
WASHINGTON, May 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement honoring Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which began on May 1:
"Asian Pacific American Heritage Month offers us the opportunity to honor the extraordinary contributions made by the AAPI community to our culture, economy, and history.
"Overcoming decades of prejudice and discrimination, those from Asia and the Pacific Islands have become essential threads in the fabric of American society. Striving for a better life, they have pursued the dream of equality and opportunity that draws so many to our shores. In medicine and law, academia and business, they demonstrate the value of hard work, and responsibility. As soldiers and public servants, they demonstrate their commitment to our country, our diverse heritage, and our common future.
"The AAPI community helps make San Francisco a truly international city. It serves as a bridge to our sister cities, such as Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City. As we mark the 100th anniversary of the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay, we remember the thousands who traveled across an ocean in search of hope – only to be detained upon arrival. Today, it is a source of pride that this same destination stands as a museum to honor the survivors and learn from our past.
"Few achievements will benefit AAPI families more than comprehensive health insurance reform. With reform in place, all of our communities will see a difference – helping end health disparities, keeping families healthy, and ensuring the success of the fight for a country free of such public health concerns as Hepatitis B, which affects the AAPI community at a higher rate than other groups.
"My city of San Francisco is blessed with a large and vibrant AAPI community. And our AAPI families and leaders play a critical role in making our diversity a source of strength nationwide. Let us take this month to celebrate the beauty of a growing, thriving, dynamic AAPI population."
