VERO BEACH, Fla., March 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Instead of sharing love on just one given day in February, the residents and associates of Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care championed an Acts of Kindness initiative for the entire month. Pelican Landing associates organized creative ways for assisted living and memory care residents to engage in acts of kindness and the opportunity to impact their hometown with a community drive benefiting local veterans.
Operated by Watercrest Senior Living Group, Pelican Landing is one of many senior living communities involved in Watercrest's Common Unity initiatives. The Acts of Kindness program is the first of several themed initiatives this year to engage residents and associates in staying connected and positively influencing the needs of our hometowns.
Pelican Landing kicked off their kindness initiative with the Sebastian American Legion and guest speakers explaining the needs of local veterans. Throughout the month, donations poured in and residents assisted in preparing donation boxes, sorting, and organizing items for delivery. Donated items will be provided to homeless veterans in Sebastian and to the Veterans Transitional Home opening this month in Vero Beach. Thanks to countless donors, Pelican Landing was also honored to present the American Legion Auxiliary Post #189 with a check for three hundred dollars.
"Kindness is a universal language that people of all walks and stages of life understand," says Hollie Kemp, Chief Experience Officer for Watercrest Senior Living Group. "Providing residents with the opportunity to communicate from the heart through good deeds is an honor for our team. These small acts spark joy, establish purpose, and create magical moments for all involved."
Residents not only enjoyed the opportunity to give back to their hometown, but also let their competitive spirits shine by participating in a Cupcake Challenge. Memory care residents selected seven cupcake recipes for a community bake-off. Residents and staff baked and decorated over 100 cupcakes for judging, and awards were given for 'Best' and 'Most Creative' cupcake. After the spirited competition, residents demonstrated their acts of kindness by proudly delivering their tasty treats to the Alzheimer's Parkinson's Association day program, the Sebastian Police Department, and the Sebastian Fire Department.
