Peirce College Celebrates 150 Years of Empowering Working Adults through Education
Sesquicentennial Anniversary to be Celebrated with Events and Activities that Encompass Mission, Historical Roots and Innovative Plans for the Future
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Peirce College launches its yearlong sesquicentennial anniversary celebration, marking 150 years of advancing the careers of non-traditional students and improving the quality of the workforce in Philadelphia.
Throughout 2015, Peirce will host a series of events that celebrate and showcase its history of transforming the lives of thousands of working adults and the economic vitality of the Philadelphia region.
"Thomas May Peirce founded this institution in 1865 to provide Civil War veterans with the practical business skills they needed to enter the workforce," said James J. Mergiotti, president and CEO of Peirce College. "With the continuation and expansion of his mission over the past century and a half, I am certain he would be proud of the school Peirce has become."
Peirce College provides working adults with an affordable education, flexible class schedules and personal attention designed to meet their needs. A pioneer in many ways, the college was among the first institutions in the country to offer higher education opportunities to women. It was also one of the first colleges to provide online learning options and the College continues to adapt its web-based course offerings to meet the evolving needs of students.
"Over the past 150 years, the College has helped hundreds of thousands of students build success, and in turn, has impacted their families and their communities, making Peirce a vital part of the Greater Philadelphia Region," continued Mergiotti. "I look forward to continuing this mission and making even more of an impact over the next 150 years."
Peirce will commemorate this milestone with events centered on its core initiatives. The 150th anniversary celebration will include:
- Women in Leadership Event: On March 12, Peirce will host a panel of noteworthy Philadelphia businesswomen who will discuss their paths to success and what it's like to hold a position of leadership in today's business environment.
- Business Employer Panel: Human resources, recruitment and career development professionals will speak on best practices for career advancement on April 28.
- Founder's Day Celebration: On Sept. 17, Peirce will host a birthday-themed event commemorating the day the institution opened its doors in 1865. Local VIPs, students, alumni, area executives and community members are invited to help celebrate.
